Verdicchio has been known in the Marche region since the 14th century, yet some believe this variety may have been known anciently as: Trebbiano di Soave, originating from the Veneto region. It is thought to be a transplanted species, brought by the Venetians in their migration to the Marche region.
Within the Marche region, Verdicchio grapes are often used alongside Malvasia and Trebbiano in making blended wine varietals. These blended wines are not well known, or sought after outside of their region. However, outside of Marche, Verdicchio, (like Chardonnnay) is often used to add acidity to Soave wines. Verdicchio is particularly renowned for its acidity, it is considered its most valuable viticultural quality. Verdicchio has a renewed emphasis on quality, as in current times it has had major competition with Soave and Pinot Grigio wines. Regrettably, in times past, some wineries have over-cropped Verdicchio, making bland, humdrum wines which have somewhat tarnished its reputation. When produced correctly, this is a beautiful wine, highly prized. Some have theorized its traditional bottle shape may also have served to deter consumers (similar to sales of Chianti Fiasco). Despite current fashion, be not mistaken, this wines history and quality is exemplary.
