Primitivo, also known as Zinfandel, is a dark skinned grape that produces tannic, deeply colored wines. Primitivo di Manduria and Dolce Naturale are both good example of the color and tannic qualities of this grape variety. Primitivo wines are typically rich in color, high in tannins, and extraordinary in flavor. Often these wines have a mouth-puckering savor of tannins and a variety of bitterness, aging in bottle or barrel helps dull these less desirable qualities.

Many consider Primitivo's current home to be Puglia Italy, and there have been constant long standing debates about its true origins and name. It’s likely to have found its Italian home as a transplant from Croatia, where it is known as Tribidrag, and Crljenak Kasteljanski, and a few other names besides. To add to the confusion, it was also transplanted in the early 19th century in the United States, known as Zinfandel. It was immediately absorbed into the American culture and claimed as their national grape. Many were upset when DNA analysis found Zinfandel and Primitivo to be the same variety, (some still debate that they are not the same, but simply similar) as several nations identify it as uniquely theirs.

WineStyle recommends this affordable, unique wine with: stewed lentils with bacon, spit-roasted lamb, and beetroot curry.

Translated, the name of grape Primitivo means “early one,” which refers directly to its early ripening behavior. Some often jump to the conclusion that Primitivo means “primitive,” which is easily forgivable as it does have a very robust nature. In its Italian home of Puglia it is commonly known as “Mirr Test,” or hard wine. Order now! Primitivo has had many ups and downs in its popularity in the past decades. The 1990s were the lowest selling span of time it has seen. This is in no small part due to Europe’s “vine pull schemes” which disposed of thousands of acres of Primitivo.

Primitivo was one of the varieties specifically targeted for its known maintenance difficulties. However, across the Atlantic, in the United States, business for Zinfandel was booming. This helped bolster confidence in Primitivo and it is now enjoying an up-swing in popularity. It was reimagined, repackaged, and is used less commonly as a blending variety, preferring to stand as its own variety entirely. It’s currently marketed as one of the historical grapes of southern Italy’s famous flagship wines.
