The liquor has a thick consistency and rich herbal taste with a characteristic bitterness.
The aroma of liquor reveals notes of medicinal herbs, among which the shades of wormwood, cashew and marmalade stand out.
This bitter can be used as an aperitif or digestif.
Unicum is a national Hungarian liquor based on four dozen herbs and aged in oak barrels. The exact recipe of bitter is kept in strict confidence. Its manufacturers specifically buy herbs more than what is required by the recipe, in order to hide the formula from competitors.
The unique was first produced in 1790 by Joseph Zwak, a physician at the court of Emperor Joseph II. According to legend, the ruler tasted liquor and said "Das ist ein Unikum!" . This phrase gave the name of the drink. The Zwak family continues to produce liquor for the third century, passing the secret recipe strictly along the line of birth.
