Producer's description
In 1848, landowner Toribio Lekanda bought 2,000 hectares of farmland from the Marquis of Valbuena. Toribio's son, Eloy Lekanda, acquires 18 thousand shoots of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Pinot Noir grapes in Bordeaux, deciding to start producing brandy and liqueurs. For the quality of the brandy produced in 1876, Eloy Lekanda received a certificate and also became a supplier to the Royal Family. In 1880 he was awarded the Grand Cross of Isabella the Catholic, it should be noted that all this happened long before the creation of the wines that glorified the estate.
In 1904, Domingo Garramiola Tchomin rented the farm, which at that time belonged to the Herrero family. Domingo played an important role in the history of the creation of Vega Sicilia , using Bordeaux technology in the production of wines. In 1915, in the winery established here, Domingo Garramiola produces two great wines: Vega Sicilia and Valbuena. The first wines were given to the upper class of the bourgeoisie and aristocracy, but not for commercial purposes. The owners of the winery offered these wines as a gift to their best friends. This is how the legend began to take shape about the most exclusive wines in Spain, which are impossible to get for money. In 1929, Vega Sicilia wines received recognition at the World Exhibition in Barcelona, and the 1917 and 1918 harvests were awarded.
In 1982, the farm was bought by the Alvarez family, which, along with the traditional production process, began to use modern technologies. The vineyards were also significantly expanded. In 1992, the family acquired the Bodegas winery in Penafiel. In 1998, Javier Ausas joined the technical management team of the winery, having worked as an oenologist for 6 years. Javier, together with Begosa Jovellar, strengthened the fame and quality of the estate's wines. In 2000, the organization Primum Familiae Vini was founded, it included 11 of the most prestigious wine producers, among which was the Vega Sicilia estate.
Today, the vineyard area of the Vega Sicilia estate is 250 hectares, where 80% of Tinto Fino grows, and the rest of Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. The farm is located in Balbuena de Duero, in the province of Valladolid, on the banks of the river. The soils here are clayey-limestone. The winery retains the appearance of an old mansion. In the internal buildings there is a chapel of Santa Sicilia, which was created by the first owners. It is believed that the winery got its name in honor of this chapel.
