Reviews of purchase High Road, Director's Reserve, 2015
Tasting Notes
The wine is a deep dark ruby red color with a purple rim.
The taste of wine is multi-layered, rich in fruit and wood tannins, slowly and as if reluctantly revealing its secrets. The deep layers of black berries and fruits are interspersed with hints of chocolate, vanilla, giving it a light sweetness. Wood and a cigar create a beautiful frame for them and provide the necessary sophisticated elegance, turning into a delicate smoky pepper aftertaste.
The wine has an intense, complex aroma, which was indisputably influenced by aging in new oak barrels. The notes of a cigar box and vanilla are the first to open the palette, giving way to saturated tones of currants and other black berries, prunes, cedar, graphite shavings and dried herbs.
Great wine for meditation. Its taste is emphasized by juicy meat dishes and mature cheeses.
Interesting Facts
Thanks to its elegance and sophistication, High Road, Director's Reserve wine is significantly different in style from the more affordable and easy to use The High Road, Classique. Both of them are made from the main Bordeaux grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. After 2010, Petit Verdot was added to the blend, which successfully combined the three main varieties and allowed each of them to make their own contribution, but not dominate the others, while maintaining the integrity of the composition. Grapes purchased in the areas of Stellenbosch and Helderberg grow only on low-yielding vines, which contributes to a high concentration and intensity of future wine. All varieties were aged separately in 225-liter new French oak barriques for 16 months. Masterful blending has maintained a balance of fruit, structure and long-term exposure.
Producer's description
High Road , a miniature winery located in the Stellenbosch district, has been producing elegant Bordeaux-style wines for more than a decade from the best vineyards in the heart of the country of red wine. The High Road was founded in 2003 by Les Sweidan and Mike Church, who are also owners of the insurance company. Working in a team with experienced winemakers, Mark Carmichael-Green and Paul Wallace, they strive to produce vibrant South African wines endowed with the elegance, inner depth and uniqueness of classic Bordeaux wines. The philosophy of winemaking is based on stringent quality requirements, which is manifested in a meticulous selection of vineyard blocks, grape sorting, separate vinification of each batch, and selection of each French oak barrel.
