Producer's description
Abegoaria is a company that brings together many wineries throughout Portugal. The history of this large-scale project merges with the history of the Biot family, born from the passion of this family for their origin, land, people and the desire to preserve their identity. It is a story that began on the left bank of the Guadiana, in the interior of the Alentejo, but today is spreading to other parts of the country. As before, a company with the same philosophy and the same determination contributes to the preservation of the best that the terroir, history and culture of Portugal can give.
In 2007, Manuel Biot became president of the Adega Granja Amareleja . He gradually restored the business, trust in the winery, its social and economic importance. Today the winery produces 95% of the region's produce. Guided by the social vision of the company, believing that associations and cooperatives best protect local identities and small farmers, Manuel began to develop new projects, first in Alentejo, then in Douro, Lisbon, Tagus, Dao, Viño Verde, as well as Beira Interior, Algarve and Azores. What started as a small winery has grown into a huge and powerful cooperative. Adega Granja Amareleja is still the standard of tradition and quality of wines on the left bank of the Guadiana, now part of Abegoaria.
Many farms are under the protection of Abegoaria, which helps them to develop and grow. Amareleza Vinhos embodies the uniqueness of the vision of its main creator, winemaker José Piteira, an undisputed master of the ancestral winemaking methods of his region. Herdade da Madeira Velha is the benchmark for the quality of Evoramonte wines. Vidigueira, Cuba e Alvito presents some of the most characteristic and iconic wines of the Alentejo sub-region, always of very high quality and with a strong character. Herdade do Gamito is one of Abegoaria's latest projects in the Alentejo, as well as one of the strongholds for the creation of the fine wine category, led by winemaker António Braga. The focus not only on wines, but also on olive oil, cheese, sausages and Barrancos ham, marks a new stage in the diversification of the Abegoaria portfolio. The pearl of the cooperative is the 500 hectares of Herdade Abegoaria dos Frades in Alqueva, where one of the best wine tourism projects in the country is planned to be realized. Quinta Vale de Fornos is another of Abegoaria's flagship projects.
In 2021, the most ambitious project of the Abegoaria group, the acquisition of Vidigal Wines , was completed. This company has the greatest strength in international markets, operating in about 40 countries and owning world famous brands. After expanding production to almost all wine regions of the country, this acquisition strengthened Abegoaria, giving it a strong boost in international markets.
