Gomez Cruzado, Montes Obarenes, Rioja DOC is a white wine of high intensity taste. 85% of the blend is Viura, the rest is Tempranillo Blanco. Grapes are grown in the vicinity of Haro and on the calcareous soils of the slopes of the Montes-Obarnes mountain range, in honor of which the wine is named. The year 2014 was cold and rainy, with difficult weather conditions, which made the vineyard work particularly important. The harvest was collected earlier than usual and sorted manually. Fermentation and aging on fine sediment was carried out in French oak barrels (80%) and in a concrete tank (20%).
The beginning of the history of the Gomez Cruzado winemaking industry is considered to be the year 1886, when a Mexican nobleman, Gomez de Artecha, Duke of Moktezuma de Tulentgo, began active wine production here. In 1916, the distillery was sold to the family of Gómez Cruzado, a native of Rioja, under whose name even today wines are produced. During the 20th century, several investors tried to revive the business, until in 2004 it was bought by the Mexican Banos family. Until then, wines were almost unknown in the markets and were available mainly only in Mexico. Therefore, it's not even clear how Gomez Cruzado was able to survive this difficult period without becoming a part of larger neighboring producers. Nevertheless, today the project really causes interest.
The winemaker, David Gonzalez, and the wine merchant, Juan Antonio Leza, took up the job, starting work as consultants first, and then becoming partners and managers. They brought fresh breath into the assortment of Gomez Cruzado wines. The equipment has been restored and modernized, so the winery looks completely new. Today Gomez Cruzado produces the most daring and modern wines of the exquisite Rioja region.
