Reviews of purchase Banfi, "Excelsus", Sant'Antimo DOC, 2003
Wine and deep rich red color.
The wine has a rich taste with great structure and powerful tannins, long and persistent finish.
Complex aroma of wine is filled with tones of black berries, cherries, violets, hints of tobacco, mint, leather and cocoa.
The wine goes well with meat dishes under a red sauce and mature cheeses.
Wine "Excelsus" closes the line of Castello Banfi wines Supertuscan. "Excelsus" in Latin means "outstanding" and the name is fully justified: the wine is produced only in the most exceptional harvest years. Each grape variety vinified separately for different technologies and at different temperatures. After malolactic fermentation barrels of mash sealed and sent for aging in the cellars of the winery until the spring of next year. Spring grade mixed and placed in French oak barrels and allowed to stand for 23 months. "Excelsus" has an excellent storage capacity and will adequately develop in the bottle for 15 years or more.
Weather conditions in 2003 were marked by heavy spring frosts and one of the hottest summers in Europe's history. Fortunately, heavy rains in winter created abundant supply of water in the soil, thus avoiding the risk of so-called "water stress" for the plant. Spring frosts in combination with hot summer resulted in lower yields of vines, however, showed a very rich berry flavor with concentrated fruit. A significant difference between day and night temperatures affected the creation of excellent structure grapes and added taste of elegance and sophistication. Exceptionally healthy berries of this vintage were collected at optimum ripeness: Cabernet Sauvignon - in mid-September, Merlot - at the end of August.
