Producer's description
The founder of the Domaine Leflaive winery is Claude Leflaive, who in 1717 acquired vineyards in the small area of Puligny-Montrachet. By inheritance, the family estate passed to Joseph Leflev (1870-1953), who, being an engineer by training, took part in the creation of the first French submarine. But, without achieving much success in this area, in 1905 Joseph returned to his hometown, took over his father’s farm and bought 25 hectares of vineyards in the area at a very low price, since most of them were affected by the phylloxera epidemic. Few people believed in the success of the business, but Joseph Leflev knew that the vineyards were of great value, so he did everything to develop them. He achieved results, and since 1920 Domaine Leflaive began producing wines under its own brand. Over time, they gained a reputation as the best wines of Burgundy, winning the hearts of connoisseurs with their excellent quality and unsurpassed taste.
Having inherited the winery after Joseph's death, four of his five children agreed on the need to preserve the great name and winemaking traditions of Domaine Leflaive. Since 1990, Joseph's daughter Anne-Claude took responsibility for the management and development of his farm. She looks at things philosophically and is not afraid to experiment, which is why, since 1990, only biodynamic growing methods have been used in all vineyards. The farm completely abandoned the use of herbicides and pesticides, and instead began to use natural fertilizers and compost. This made it possible to saturate the soil with nutrients, improve the health of the vines and obtain an excellent natural product. As Anne-Claude herself says, her wines have incredible intensity, full of vitality and energy. The daughter of the legendary Joseph Leflève was not afraid to make revolutionary changes, and she herself became a legend.
