Commandaria is the oldest unique dessert wine traditionally produced in the Commandaria region at the foot of the Troodos mountain range. It was known in ancient times, when the Greek Cypriot wine from raisins was served at the Greek festivities in honor of the gods. It received its modern name from the Crusaders, the Knights of the Order of St. John. He was served at the wedding ceremony of Richard the Lionheart and Berengaria of Navarre. Later, the king sold the land where the wine was produced to the Order of the Templars and Guy de Lusignan, but retained the estate "La Grande Commanderie" near Limassol. Through the centuries that followed, Commandaria’s wine passed unchanged. Now, as before, it is made in 14 small villages of the indigenous Cypriot grape varieties Mavro and Xynisteri growing on the volcanic soils of the eastern slopes of the mountains.
"Commandaria St. John" AOC is a classic example of a wine of a protected geophysical name Commandaria. For him, grapes grow on organic-poor volcanic soils, yielding small but high-quality yields. The berries are allowed to ripen on the vines and, after harvest, are left in the scorching Cyprus sun until the water from them evaporates. After the grapes are pressed, the resulting concentrated juice-syrup is left for natural fermentation in wooden vats. After fermentation, the wine is fed to aging in barrels through the solera system, that is, the old wine is always mixed with the young. This allows you to achieve a stable taste regardless of vintage. Wine "Commandaria St. John" - a true symbol of Cyprus, it will be a great gift to every connoisseur of noble drinks.
KEO Group is a Cyprus company, founded in 1927. She specializes in the creation of beverages, occupying a leading position in the wine and brewing industry in Cyprus. The outstanding quality of the company's products has also made it popular abroad. The KEO Group began producing pilsner type beer and lager back in 1951. The first brewery of the company had a small capacity, producing only 300 thousand gallons per year. In order to increase the volume of foam drink manufacturing, the company carried out a large-scale modernization. Now the updated brewery produces 30 thousand hectoliters of beer per month. In addition, the company owns the SWS and Sun Island brands, under which there is a wide range of fruit juices and canned fruits and vegetables. Raw materials for them are grown on their own gardens and fields of the company.
The KEO Group owns one winery in Limassol and three in Krasochoria, in the region of the Troodos Mountains. Its wineries Mallia Estate and Pera Pedi were among the first to be built on the island. They are located in close proximity to the vineyards, which allows you to create a continuous cycle of making wine. LAONA Boutique Winery, founded in 1986 near the town of Arsos, was acquired by the KEO Group in 1993. Located at an altitude of about 1 thousand meters in the Troodos Mountains, it cultivates the rare indigenous Cypriot varieties of grapes from which noble wines of protected origin are made. Specialists from KEO Group continue to experiment with the vine and winemaking techniques. The research center was the winery Mallia Estate, where the revival of old Cypriot grape varieties is carried out. Now all the wines of the company are vinified at the facilities of this plant.
