Interesting Facts
Refined, refreshing white wine Pouilly-Fuisse "Clos des Quarts" AOC is made from Chardonnay grapes. A third of the berries for it were collected from vines planted in 1917, the remaining two-thirds - from younger ones, age 62-67 years. The grapes went to the whole crushing, fermenting with their own "wild" yeast and malolactic fermentation in new barrels. The final 18-month ripening of the wine took place in old oak barrels. Experts recommend drinking this wine in 2019-2022.
Producer's description
Château de Car was founded in 2012 by two friends-winemakers - Dominique Lafon and Olivier Merlin. Management of the estate took on Olivier Merlin, at his own plant in La Roche Vineous produced wine Chateau des Quarts. It was Olivier who initiated the acquisition of the vineyard. The last 10 years he was absorbed in the search for a terroir, which could demonstrate the best qualities of Pouilly-Fuess. Finally he bought a box of grapes grown on the "Clos de Car" and realized that his quest was over. He contacted an experienced winemaker, Dominique Lafon, and a couple of friends bought this vineyard in Maconne, calling their joint venture Chateau des Quarts.
The vineyard "Clos des Quarts" is a monopoly, that is, it belongs to the same owner. It occupies 2,63 hectares, but on it grow more than 25 thousand bushes of grapes. Among them there are 100-year-old vines. The vineyard is oriented to the east, a shallow layer of glandular soil lies on a solid limestone base. Vines on the "Clos de Car" are cultivated by the methods of organic farming.
