Vineyards Chateau Léoville Poyferre present in the XVII century belonged adviser Bordeaux Parliament, the noble bourgeois Jean de Mouat, a Chateau bore the name of the owner - "Mont-Moytie". Wine Chateau, along with wines from Chateau Margaux, were among the first to gain recognition and popularity of wines of the Medoc. In the XVIII century Chateau passes into the possession of the famous Alexander de Gasquet, who renamed Chateau Léoville. Alexander tried to make Léoville place of production of the best wines of the Medoc. He expanded ownership by purchasing neighboring land, planted new plantations of grapes, reducing the number of varieties, built a new cellar, which introduces modern at the time of vinification techniques. After his death, Léoville in Saint-Julien was the largest Medoc Chateau, there are 120 hectares of land.
Gask left no direct heirs and Chateau was divided between distant relatives. One part went to the Marquis de Las Kaz, over time it was divided among his children: son got a large area now known as Château Léoville Las Kaz and his daughter Joan, who married Baron Jean-Marie de Poyferre - fourth of the old manor. Thus began the history of the Château Léoville Poyferre. Chateau and vineyards belonging to it had to go through hard times - the era of economic depression, a terrible invasion of phylloxera and mildew, which by the end of the XIX century have destroyed almost the entire vineyard.
In 1920, the family bought Chateau Cuvelier - a large merchant, known since 1804, already owns the beginning of XX century Chateau near Bordeaux. Léoville Poyferre - jewel in the crown Cuvelier - however, long enough not produced decent wines, despite the magnificent thin terroir and rich potential. A true renaissance for Chateau began to come to management in 1979 Didier Cuvelier. He had nothing to winemaking and received accounting education. But he had a "good" head, and he quickly realized - in which direction to move. Taking advice from a professional oenologist - Professor Emile Peynaud and Michel Rolland, Didier has invested significant investments in the modernization of vineyards and wineries and cellars. Under his leadership, the vineyards were replanted and graded emphasis has shifted from Merlot to Cabernet Sauvignon. Planted area was expanded from 48 to 80 hectares. For wines Chateau handsomely returned former glory. Today, the Château produces three wines in a rich, full, seductive style, which has repeatedly won the highest score of 100 points from the famous wine critics.
