Bodega "Catena Zapata" - a famous winery of Argentina, located in the Mendoza region. The company’s owners are Nicolas Catena and his daughter Laura. Nicholas Cate's great-grandfather emigrated to Argentina from Italy in 1898. He acquired land in Mendoza, took up viticulture and cultivated the first crop of Malbec in 1902. Catena believed that this variety, long grown in Bordeaux, will fully reveal its character in the land of the Argentine Andes. His son Domingo realized the dream of his father, becoming the largest owner of vineyards in Mendoza. Nicholas Catena spent a lot of time in California in Napa Valley, where he studied the methods of producing local wines. At that time, he collaborated with the famous Robert Mondavi, seeking to surpass the best wines of France. They believed in this opportunity. And when Nicholas Catena returned to Mendoza, he sold his company, which produced table wines. Only one of the subsidiaries of the family wine business remains - Bodega Esmeralda. Argentina at that time was known as a producer of mass cheap wine, and Nicholas went against the general trend.
In the 1980s – 1990s, Nicolas Catena concentrated his efforts on choosing optimal microclimate conditions for various grape varieties and even their clones. He decided to plant the vines of Chardonnay and Malbec in the Gualtalari region, where the height above sea level is almost 1,500 meters. It was the only way to improve the quality of grapes while limiting the yield of vineyards. It was a big risk and responsibility. Many doubted that Malbec would reach full maturity at that height. But all the same grapes turned out excellent. Thus, Nicholas was the first to discover that Mendoza and the clones are an exceptional area for growing grapes. The cool climate, high mountain valleys and poor Andean soil proved to be ideal conditions for the highest quality grapes.
During the 1990s, Nicolas Catena and his team identified the best vineyard sites for growing Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. As a result, a new line of super premium wines has appeared - "Catena Alta". Initially, they were conceived as wines from a single vineyard. But in 2001, an excellent Malbec harvest was harvested from three different vineyards of the Catena family, and it was very difficult to choose the best of them. Therefore, since that time, "Catena Alta" Cabernet Sauvignon and "Catena Alta" Malbec are produced as a blend of "different microclimates". Each of the terroirs gives the wine unique characteristics. But, unlike red wines, the white “Catena Alta” Chardonnay is still made from grapes from a single vineyard called “Adrianna”. It is the most mountainous in its location, which gives the grapes and, subsequently, the wine a bright minerality and perfect purity of taste.
A team of winemakers works in Catena Zapata , in which the most successful and talented winemakers in Argentina participate - Alejandro Seyanovich and Jose Galante, who is the main winemaker and has worked in the company since 1975. The great successes of the vineyards of Catena Zapata became possible thanks to his scientific approach to winemaking.
