Calabria Family Wines was founded 75 years ago by Francesco and Elizabeth Calabria, the history of the company began in 1945. In 1927, Domenico Calabria migrated from Southern Italy, accompanied by his son Francesco Calabria. In 1934, since enough money had been saved, Francesco wrote to his wife Elizabeth to join him in Australia, which he often called "rich land." In 1945, the company was founded, homemade wines were made for the survival of the family, it was the only source of income for Calabria. In 1966, the sons of Francesco, Bill and Tony, joined the winery, fresh ideas and enthusiasm of young people allowed to increase production from 84 to 256 tons per year. In 1970, the brothers released their first bottled wine under the Calabria brand name. In 1988, the Australian wine industry fell into decay. Resourceful, unbroken by difficulties, Bill begins to wash bottles for large wineries, this saved the family business and provided the opportunity to produce wines for the export market in the early 90s, when demand for Australian wine grew. Bill, determined to make premium wines, sends the first batch of wines to the UK in 1996. He begins a quick modernization of the winery, expanding production to 950 tons per year.
After more than seven decades, the third generation, Frank, Michael, Andrew and Elizabeth, proudly continues to appreciate the hard work and innovation of their grandparents. Thanks to determination, hard work and carefully guarded family traditions, Calabria Family Wines has become one of the top 20 wine producers in Australia. Calabria wines are sold in all Australian markets and exported worldwide to 36 countries. The total production capacity reaches 8,000 tons. In 2015, Bill and his children acquire a 100-year-old vineyard in the Barossa Valley in South Australia, one of the greatest wine-growing regions in the world. In 2019, the Calabria family winery opened the doors to its newly acquired Barossa Valley wine cellar and restaurant, located in the Elisabeth Estate family vineyard.
