Reviews of purchase "Abandonado" Douro DOC, 2009
Tasting Notes
Copper-colored port.
The taste of wine is very smooth, balanced, with a strong personality, notes of ripe red fruits and a long, harmonious finish.
The aroma of wine is filled with tones of caramel and toffee, notes of spices and dried figs.
Port wine is excellent at the end of the meal, either alone or with a plate of walnuts or roasted almonds. It goes well with desserts with almonds and berries, as well as dark chocolate.
Interesting Facts
The wines of the Caldas line are made from the harvest from the vineyards of one of the most beautiful farms in Douro - Quinta das Caldas, which has a great historical tradition and was once owned by the famous Mrs. Anthony Adelaide Ferreira. At the moment, the farm owned by Alves de Souza is being restructured using a whole range of innovative technical tools, without neglecting the valuable heritage left by the ancestors. This mixture of tradition and modernity will certainly strengthen the position of Quinta das Caldas as one of the pillars of the production of excellent wines.
"Caldas" Porto Tawny Special Reserve - a rich, aromatic, very soft and balanced port wine, received for its organoleptic characteristics two gold medals at the "Berliner Wein Trophy".
Producer's description
Alves de Sousa is a family owned company, currently owned by Domingos Alves de Souza, whose grandfather and father were winemakers in Douro. But Domingos initially chose a different career. After receiving a degree in civil engineering, he only in 1987 decided to devote himself exclusively to work in the family estate and other estates, which he later acquired, in which Domingos worked on the redevelopment of land and the restructuring of vineyards.
For a long time, he was a supplier of well-known and prestigious companies, such as Casa Ferreirinha and Sociedade dos Vinhos Borges. But the problems that affected the wine sector in the late 1980s and led to an exaggerated increase in production costs made him doubt the profitability of his possessions. In order to independently create high-quality wine required technical and professional training. Domingos Alves de Souza began attending winegrowing and winemaking courses, with the knowledge gained, he began to restructure his vineyards and decided to follow his own way as a producer, having built a Quinta da Gaivosa winery on his estate. Having experimented with several grape varieties, he chose those that were most suitable for producing the best Douro DO grading wines. His first wine conquered connoisseurs and deserved the best reviews from critics. It was the beginning of the journey, full of success, which stretches to this day and has a great future.
