Veuve Clicquot is an elite French Champagne brand originally established in 1772 by Monsieur Philippe Clicquot. The word «veuve» means widow in French, for Philippe’s daughter-in-law, Barbe Nicole Clicquot, who took over control of the company after her husband’s death. Under Madame Clicquot’s management, the company flourished and has since achieved great commercial success. She invented a new technology of storing wine bottles upside down, so the sediment collects at the neck.

Clicquot wines were served throughout Russian and European imperial courts during the 1800s. At the beginning of the last century, a lovely new Champagne concoction, “La Grande Dame”— a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir — was created to commemorate Madame Clicquot.

Today only the French winery Moet & Chandon outranks Veuve Clicquot in terms of sales. House Clicquot sells 12 million bottles annually. Generally, Clicquot Champagne are served as an aperitif or with dessert, but they also perfectly compliment seafood, appetizers and salads.
