The Pinot Grigio grape has a beautiful dual identity, known as Pinot Grigio (Italian), and Pinot Gris (French), yet both names refer to the same grape species. The palatable difference between the two are unmistakable in the wines they represent. The flavor contrast is so distinct, that wines labelled Pinot Grigio, are treated as a different variety than those labelled Pinot Gris. For our purposes, we are dealing only with the Pinot Grigio variety which is descendant from northeastern Italy, namely the Veneto, Friuli-Venezia-Giulia and Trentino-Alto Adige regions. The Grigio wine style is light and dry, while refreshingly crisp. It is often described as aromatic with notes of citrus, green apple, and blossoms. It is favored in many countries, including Australia and the United States (where it is often referred to as “Greej,” affectionately). Pinot Grigio ranges in color from a deep gold, to copper, to pink and pale yellow.

The Pinot Grigio style is accomplished by a fairly early harvest of the grapes, to retain acidity, which this grape species is not commonly known for. This acidity is prized, as it creates its characteristic freshness and “zip.” Grigio disdains barrels for fermentation and storage, instead favoring stainless-steel tanks, which communicates its straight forward character. If Grigio were stored in barrels, it would grant vanilla-esque aromas and palate weight, which would depreciate its delightful, clean style
