A native of Burgundy, Paul Masson came to California in 1878, where he met with the French emigrant Charles Lefranom, engaged in wine in the Santa Clara Valley. After listening to a number of business courses at the College of San Jose, Masson in 1880 returned home and worked in the wine industry, but because of the phylloxera epidemic that hit European vineyards and winemaking led the decline, after a while he returned to America and works in Lefranc. After the death of Lefranc in 1887, Paul married his daughter Louise and became manager of the family business, at that time owned by two daughters and a son, Charles - Henry.
