A native of Burgundy, Paul Masson came to California in 1878, where he met with the French emigrant Charles Lefranom, engaged in wine in the Santa Clara Valley. After listening to a number of business courses at the College of San Jose, Masson in 1880 returned home and worked in the wine industry, but because of the phylloxera epidemic that hit European vineyards and winemaking led the decline, after a while he returned to America and works in Lefranc. After the death of Lefranc in 1887, Paul married his daughter Louise and became manager of the family business, at that time owned by two daughters and a son, Charles - Henry. After a brief collaboration, share repurchases Masson Henry Almaden vineyard and in 1892 released the first champagne. Later, he founded the company "Paul Masson", engaged in manufacture of brandy and was so successful that its founder was nicknamed "Brandy Duke." Coming from France, Masson inherited the best traditions of European masters brand that successfully supplemented and developed an eminent authority on the California wine Eli Skofis, a long time collaborator with the company. During the long years of its operation, the company "Paul Masson" repeatedly noted by various awards, received a special prize of President Johnson as one of the first exporters of wine production.
