Lambrusco is a wine for summer, a light and sparkling red wine from the Italian regions of Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy. It’s a wine with an ancient tradition which reaches back to the Romans and even to the Etruscans. During the 1970s and 1980s, Lambrusco was the most popular imported wine in the United Kingdom.

The Lambrusco grape has an interesting history. Traditionally it was trained to grow up poplar trees, keeping it high off the ground. While the poplar trees are no longer used, the vines are still trained on high trellises to avoid the development of mildew. Although known for the sweet varieties of wine it produces, the grape itself is not inherently oversweet and can be used to produce excellent, fruity dry wines.

The main characteristics of wines made from the Lambrusco grape are a light and fresh flavour, the mild sparkle or frizzante which leaves a zing on the tongue, and low alcohol content, about 11%. Together these qualities make these perfect summer quaffing wines.

There are more than sixty varieties of the Lambrusco grape, so there is a range of wine styles to match. From the Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro with its violet sheen and fruity bouquet to the atypical Lambrusco Rosato, a new and lighter rose style which is becoming popular.

The infinite variety of Lambrusco makes these wines perfect for experimenting and the serious drinker will enjoy many long hours trying different varieties. All of them are designed to be drunk young, so there is no need to hunt for special vintages.
